When a medical emergency happens at one of the largest airports in the United States, response time is everything. At Denver International, Denver Health Paramedics respond across a massive footprint that includes long concourses, crowded terminals, and parking facilities with more than 51,000 spaces — an environment where distance, crowds, and access points can slow traditional ambulance response.
To improve mobility across the airport, Denver Health deployed Trikke Positron patrol vehicles so paramedics can reach patients faster while carrying critical medical equipment.
According to Denver Health Paramedic Lieutenant Tom Stoffer, the size and layout of the airport present constant mobility challenges for emergency responders.
“The footprint of the terminal and concourses is quite large with the terminal measuring 2.6 million square feet and at least one of our concourses is a mile long,” Stoffer said. “The sheer size of the airport and thousands of passengers to navigate through presents significant challenges to providing timely responses to medical emergencies.”

The three-wheel electric Positron allows paramedics to move quickly through crowded areas, narrow corridors, elevators, and parking structures.
“The Trikke capably carries all our equipment which allows our airport paramedics to provide the same level of care patients would receive if an ambulance responded,” Stoffer said. “Even with this load carrying ability, the Trikke is very nimble allowing us to effectively navigate through the facility with ease.”
In addition to the terminal and concourses, paramedics also use their Trikkes in multi-level parking garages and exterior areas of the airport.
“Trikkes have plenty of torque to climb the ramps in our parking garages and are able to utilize small pedestrian passageways to allow for quicker response to emergencies,” Stoffer said.
To support paramedic operations, Trikke Professional Mobility developed custom brackets that allow oxygen tanks, cardiac monitors, and medical bags to be securely mounted to the vehicle without affecting performance or maneuverability.

According to Jim Fulmer, operations director, upgrading patrol mobility significantly improved patrol operations.
“The Trikkes offer greater mobility in crowds and are easier for our security team to maneuver. Since putting them into service as the main means of patrolling in April 2024, we have cut fuel costs by at least 20%, respond to calls quicker, and cover 2–3 times more ground per shift.”
