In the City of Brotherly Love, officers are proud to show the public their newest ride

Parked atop the Art Museum steps Rocky made famous, a Philadelphia police Trikke debuted on Instagram.

That was earlier this year, when the country’s fifth-largest police department deployed its first four Trikke Positron 72V XL units. This fall, it ordered four more. Center City officers have also completed Trikke’s Train the Trainer program, so the department can teach new riders itself.

The department hasn’t been shy about its new patrol vehicle. “Rolling through Center City a little different,” the 9th District’s Instagram post began. “We’re proud to introduce the Trikke to the Philadelphia Police department — a discreet, efficient way for our officers to navigate tight streets, busy blocks, and areas where traditional vehicles can’t easily go. This helps us stay more visible, more accessible, and better connected to the community we serve.”

How the Philadelphia Police Trikke debuted on Instagram

In June, the PPD Center City District shared a photo of its officers at Open Streets, when Center City closes its streets to cars, with a Trikke in the lineup.

Center City is the downtown of the sixth-largest city in the United States, home to roughly 1.55 million people. It covers about two square miles between the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers and holds City Hall, the city’s tallest towers, and neighborhoods such as Rittenhouse Square, Old City and Chinatown. This year the city also drew huge crowds for America’s 250th birthday, FIFA World Cup matches and the MLB All-Star Game.

The Philadelphia Police Foundation, which funded the first units, called the Trikke “a unique hybrid of the agility of a foot beat and the speed of a motorized unit.” It also noted that the stand-up design “allows officers to see over crowds and vehicles.”
